The Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the facilitator of the National Electric Highway Coalition (NEHC), and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) in March announced their participation in the White House’s electric vehicle (EV) acceleration challenge.
This initiative is a call to action from the White House to all stakeholders in the private and public sectors to dedicate resources and make independent commitments to support the electrification of transportation.
EEI and APTA worked together to develop a resource guide for transit agencies to help streamline their efforts to electrify bus fleets. The guide was designed to help transit agencies partner with their local electric companies early in the electrification process in order to deploy electric transit buses as efficiently and cost effectively as possible.
EEI President Tom Kuhn said the guide, combined with funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is going to play a large role in accelerating the electrification of transit buses across the country.
“EEI and our member companies are committed to delivering resilient clean energy across our economy, and we are excited about all of the work underway to use that energy to reduce emissions from the transportation sector,” said Kuhn. “We are thankful to APTA for its partnership in developing a resource guide to help transit agencies get off to a fast start as they work to electrify their bus fleets.”
The guide provides a detailed checklist of questions to ask their electric company partners and information that transit agencies should gather when first engaging electric companies. It also includes a glossary of the terminology that transit agencies are likely to encounter during the electrification process. While this guide is targeted for electric bus deployment, other agencies and companies that are looking to electrify their fleet vehicles also can benefit from the information.
“Federal funding for electrification, a critical step in enhancing our environment, is set to transform bus fleets across America,” said APTA President Paul Skoutelas. “We’re excited to partner with EEI to develop resources that will help our members plan and prepare for this transition to zero-emission fleets.”
